Kaikoura Whale Watch:

Travel through the rich farmland of North Canterbury to the historic coastal township of Kaikoura. Here you will experience Kaikoura's European beginnings, moulded by the whaling industry of the 19th century. Kaikoura's oldest house was built in 1860 on foundations of whale vertebrae. The nearby old wharf built in 1882 still accommodates the try pots in which whale blubber was rendered down. Kaikoura is the centre for a crayfishing industry, testament to the Maori name Kai - meal of koura - crayfish. Weather and sea conditions permitting, a purpose built vessel will take you in search of the sperm whales. On return from the whale watch, we visit the Kaikoura seal colony before complimentary wine tasting at Canterbury House.
